Alykanas beach guide Zante
Alykanas village beach, along with neighbouring Alykes, is a typical family beach located on the north-east coast of Zante about 18 kilometres from Zakynthos Town. The sands at Alykanas lie in a a gently curving cove that faces north-west.
It sweeps west from a headland where there is a large harbour wall offering ample protection and providing calm clear waters along the shore. The harbour adds both visual interest and useful protection too from the brisk northern winds.
The beach is of good sand that shelves very gently into the sea and the waters are shallow for a good distance offshore, so this is a very popular destination for families with children.
Alykanas beach has a wide range of watersports to keep visitors occupied, from pedaloes to paragliding and banana boats.
Expect to find a wide variety of restaurants, from international to local Greek. Holiday visitors can find several Chinese and Indian restaurants, along with plenty of fast-food grills and cafes for snacks.
Despite the crowds and the tavernas, cafes and bars, Alykanas can still be considered a relaxed and a fairly quiet resort. There is little else on offer in the evening than a meal in a taverna and a drink in a bar.
On the outskirts of the modern beach area is the picturesque village of Old Alykanas, scattered with more traditional tavernas and shops.
Good walking can be found in the hills around Alykanas and there are plenty of well-marked paths and trails to follow. The walk to Alykes is popular and takes about 20minutes. A small tourist train also runs between the two resorts taking in some of the hill villages.
Always on offer are popular holiday boat excursions to Zante's famous Blue Caves and to Shipwreck Bay and Navagio beach.
The remarkable sea caves of Zante are made even more dramatic thanks to the pure white cliffs and seabed which enhances the azure colour of the water to create a simply stunning seascape.
The Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos is located in the heart of Zaknte Town in Solomou Square, in Zakynthos town and houses a rich and interesting collection of art and artefacts.
A boat trip to Shipwreck Cove is one of the most popular excursions for those on holiday in Zante and the beach must be considered one of the most spectacular sights in the Greek islands.
Argassi or Argasi beach is the nearest decent beach to Zakynthos Town and that does something to explain its popularity with UK tour operators. This is the perfect family friendly resort.
