Day trip to Tsougria Skiathos

tsougria skiathos

A very popular Skiathos day trip destination.

As holiday visitors sip their drinks at cafes and tavernas on the long harbour front of Skiathos they are sure to notice small islets lying offshore over the clear blue water of the Sporades islands.

The trio of uninhabited islets that sit near the bay of Skiathos Town have become a very popular day trip destination for holidaymakers on Skiathos.

Excursion boats leave the harbour daily throughout the summer holiday season to take visitors across the bay to the islets of Tsougria,Tsougraki and Arkos.

Not only is the boat trip a pleasant change from sunbathing on Skiathos beaches or sipping coffee in one of the many habourside kafenio, the islets also have their own very fine beaches.

The most biggest and most popular of the islands is Tsougria which lies directly south of Skiathos Town and can easily be seen from the town harbour.

Tsougria also has the best beaches of all three islets with two impressive strips of sand that make for an ideal day out.

The best Tsougria beach is located in a sheltered bay of very shallow water so this is the one that most families with young children will head for.

A beach cantina usually opens in the high season summer months serving drinks and snacks and often sunbeds are laid out in front of the cantina.

The other beach is on the opposite side of the islet and it usually involves a walk over the headland to reach it. Boats do sometimes go directly but a few underwater rocks that can make mooring up a little tricky. A beach cantina has opened in recent years.

There was once a settlement on the islet but this has long been abandoned and no one lives on the island now.

A little to the west of Tsougria is its sister islet, the smaller rocky Tsougriaki. This island doesn't have a beach but visitors will often sail in and moor the boat in once of the attractive coves for an afternoon of peaceful swimming.

To the north-east, and a little closer to the coast of Skiathos is the islet of Arkos. Day trip boats don't usually go here so, if you fancy a trip you will need to hire your own boat, easily done in Skiathos harbour.

Arkos has a small beach and a cantina usually opens during the summer to serve basic drinks and snacks. There are fine views of Skiathos Town from Arkos and the atmosphere relaxed and peaceful.
